Empress Avenue days

I and many others have wonderful memories of our house share with Alan in Ilford in the 80s, which have become affectionately known as “the Empress Avenue days”. We hosted Ilford’s “must go to” parties - even if the BBQ got a bit out of hand on one occasion! Alan of course was always a perfect host at these events. We always enjoyed his culinary delights - he was a fabulous cook, but it did take a while to clear up the kitchen afterwards! We blasted out music (my 80’s dance music competing with Alan’s classical); debated all manner of subjects - putting the world to rights; explored the sights and sounds of the capital city together; appreciated the delights available from the off-licence next door; and of course enjoyed hot-footing it to the nearby Rose and Crown for a pint of Adnams…and in Alan’s case, an occasional whiskey too.

Over time we all followed our own paths but the rapport between us all remains to this day. I’m very happy to say that these “Empress Avenue days” were the foundation of a life-long friendship with Alan and others alike which I will always treasure.
